The Retail Risk Sustainability Award

RF/RFID Pulpability Calculator

Checkpoint Systems

As retail moves into a more sustainable future, Checkpoint recognised the importance of becoming an Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) member.

In June 2024, Checkpoint Systems presented a Fibre Submission to APCO to review the recyclability impact of their range of RF/RFID Labels when attached to fibre based packaging materials.

As a result of this submission, Checkpoint developed a Pulpability Calculator using the information verified in repulpability assessments to extrapolate outcomes using different inlays and fibre packaging dimensions and weight. RF/RFID Labels have been approved by APCO to be classified as either Recyclable or Recyclable with lost value after the assessment has been completed using the Pulpability Calculator.

Checkpoint customers who go through this process are able to share their results and therefore use the ‘Recyclable’ ARL for the approved format if they are ARL program members.

The next step is to have the RF/RFID Labels recyclable on different substrates and Checkpoint is working with APCO to achieve this result.

The Pulpability Calculator is a huge step forward in creating a more sustainable future and has been well received by Australian Retailers and packaging companies.
